Kindergarteners at Morningside STEM Elementary explore force
Kindergarteners at Morningside STEM Elementary have spent the last two weeks discovering the science of push and pull forces to design their very own playground.
Carrie Gilmore, the kindergarten teacher behind the project, collaborated with District consulting teachers to create this unique opportunity. Leading up to the design process, students learned to pinpoint push and pull forces on the school playground and throughout the building.
Once students had a firm knowledge of push and pull forces, they worked in small groups to design and build their own cardboard playgrounds with push and pull forces.
Gilmore said, “It was nice to see the students’ ideas come to life. They learned to collaborate and communicate, which is so important in kindergarten.”
This project is part of the “Define Learning” curriculum—a statewide STEM initiative that focuses on the discovery of science and math in the community.
